    Up to a $2,000 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest of the driver who was traveling east on Highway 44 at 9:30 p.m. on June 23, 2006. The vehicle swerved across onto the southbound Interstate 5 transition road and struck and killed a pedestrian who was walking east on Highway 44. The driver stopped momentarily before fleeing.     Blaming budget shortfalls, state highway officials announced Tuesday that they are shelving a long-hoped-for plan to widen Highway 44 from Redding to Palo Cedro to focus their efforts on improving Interstate 5. The announcement to put the so-called Stillwater project on hold comes despite highway officials having already spent at least $1.7 million to plan the project as well as having a nearly $4 million congressional earmark in the till to improve the Stillwater Drive interchange. Dan Little, executive director of the Shasta County Regional Transportation Planning Agency, said the decision was difficult, but there's simply not enough federal and state money to complete the estimated $68 million project.... cont...

The essentials of a proposal for Redding to team up with Lithia Motors Inc. to build an auto mall inside the city limits along Airport Road at Highway 44 were already spelled out in that early 2005 document.
